Note about report: I might be a bit sparse with details about some of the panels but that’s usually because someone was recording them and I’m hoping they’ll be put online.

Upon arriving at about 8 o’clock I entered the bar and watched the opening ceremony. First, the main organiser person got on stage and mentioned some of the con rules about alcohol and then encouraged everyone to buy from the bar since it wouldn’t be available next year unless it made money this year. (He said more but that’s all I remember)

Following that, the guests all came up and introduced themselves and then there was a break until the chat show got set up. Stuart Claw then started chatting to Sonia Leong, Emma Viecelli and Mike Mcfarland and the show ended with Mike Mcfarland playing Hotel California on guitar and Emma Viecelli singing it.

On Saturday I had a bit of a browse of the dealers’ hall (Sendit.com was there selling dvds and Sweatdrop was selling manga and prints, there was also some secondhand manga, anime, films, books and games being sold. I got NGE platinum volume 7 for £5! And I bought some sweatdrop manga and a secondhand Gravitation manga volume 1 for £4) The Saturday cosplay theatre had 2 entries, one was a game show skit with Cloud, some Bleach dudes and Misa and the second one had Nabeshin, Tamaki and the 12-year-old Battle Royale cosplayer.

After that was the question time where the con organiser person asked Mike Mcfarland, Stuart Claw, Hugh David, Emma Viecelli and Sonia Leong about their views on fansubbing and the rising popularity of anime cons in the UK and Ireland. Following that was the FMA film which I skipped then the manga art class in the dealers hall.

I only saw the second half but it was quite interesting, Sonia and Emma were using a flipchart to demonstrate some basic rules for drawing manga with topics including expressions, anatomy, females and males, hair and eyes while most of the people watching copied the diagrams and took notes. After that was the Mike McFarland panel in the bar (possible footage appearing soon) then the cosplay catwalk.

The winners were Sakura from Card Captor Sakura, Ruby Moon from CCS and someone from Bleach. I think there were about 10 contestants and they each came up on stage and did a little action associated with their character for example, the Sakura cosplayer acted out the card capturing ritual with the star staff yoke. Following that was the anime pub quiz. There were 5 rounds, 10 questions per round and the questions included: What famous anime was repeatedly referenced in the Battle Royale film (NGE) and who was the composer for the film Gladiator (Hans Zimmer).

The team with all the guests got the highest score of 64/100 but since they couldn’t win anything the prize was given to the team with the second highest score, Team with Name Longer than a Fallout Boy Song. After that I want up to the manga library which was super cool, there were tons of manga, magazines, anime reference and art books and some beanbags and chairs. The games room was pretty good too there seemed to be a good selection though I was only there for a short while I played Resident Evil 4. I went down to the disco around 9 and found the bar empty with the con staff singing in the corner.

I got in on Sunday at around 11:30 and saw the second half of the Independent art panel with Sonia, Emma and 2 Irish Manga artists whose story featured in the Tokyopop Rising Stars of Manga book, I forget their last names but their first names were Sinead and Leeann. It was again a very interesting panel, all about getting into the manga business, originality and whatnot. Afterward I went to the FMA film with Mike Mcfarland commenting. I think I asked the most questions. He said lots of interesting stuff but I didn’t record it.( if you want to know more, ask me cos I’m too lazy to write much here.)

The questions I asked were: was it ever explained what souls were made of in the series, was Noa’s psychicness ever explained, what did the runes in the transmutation circle mean, why did Gluttony delay eating Wrath for only as long as it took for Wrath to explain his sacrifice to Al, did he ever watch FMA parodies, what did he think of yaoi, when were the OAVs going to be released. There were so many questions asked by all the peoples that we didn’t leave the screening room till 2:30. I then went down to the dealer’s hall and browsed the artwork that had been submitted to the art competion and sat down for the Anime Network Panel. They gave out free t-shirts or bags to everyone who asked a question!

Finally there was the charity raffle, games and artwork prize-giving, the prizes included Sailor Moon wallscrolls and cards, video games, dvds, manga and 2 FMA figure/toy things. A picture of a pantyshot won special mention in the art competition. Lastly the closing ceremony where it was all like thanks for everything and come back next year. And then everyone left feeling all happy!

Cosplay spotting!!: Naruto (Kakashi, Naruto, Sasuke and assorted d00dz with headbands), Ouran ( mad hatter Tamaki and Nekozawa), Card Captor Sakura ( Sakura and Ruby) Bleach, Battle Royale, Death Note (Misa and Light), Final Fantasy (Cloud), Hellsing (Seras Victoria and Alucard), Excel Saga (Nabeshin and someone wearing a Menchi hat)
